  4.     Nonkosher butchers usually keep a low profile in Israel,
  5. supplying meats to Christians and nonobservant Jews. But last
  6. week about half a dozen butchers handed out free ham sandwiches
  7. in downtown Jerusalem, attracting dozens of amused takers while
  8. infuriating others.

  10.     The giveaway was designed to protest a proposed ban on the
  11. sale of pork by Jewish businesses. The pork law was one of four
  12. concessions the government made to the small ultra-Orthodox
  13. Agudat Israel party last week in return for a coalition
  14. agreement. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir also promised to impose
  15. further restrictions on abortion, curb public transportation on
  16. the Sabbath, and outlaw certain forms of advertising deemed
  17. obscene by religious leaders.
